English thatched cottages…
Oh yes, English thatched cottages, the stock photographers favourite subject matter – that and rolling fields full of golden hay bales! Though talking of hay bale shots, one of my agency editors once told me he didn’t want one of my hay bale shots because ‘they never sell’ and I admit, looking back over the stats, I thought he was right – but low and behold, next day I sold a hay bale shot for a good price on another agency!
Anyway, I digress. So, English thatched cottages. Well, they won’t make anyone a millionaire in stock terms but there is a call for the right ones. Last spring I took a trip to Dorset and found hundreds of them littered all over the place – which was a good thing because I’d looked at my own images and thought there was a gap where idyllic, typical, traditional thatched cottages should be! So I’ve now filled this thatched-cottageless zone and will probably never need to shoot another – they don’t go out of date! Thankfully! That’s the beauty of historical subjects…
